Ten Years of Indie Rock
As we close out a decade, it’s safe to say that the rock world was defined by the indie rock movement. What started out at the beginning of the decade on the heels of the success of bands like The Strokes, the White Stripes, and others, has turned into an entire genre all in its own.
It’s unique to see the longevity of the indie movement when you consider other recent music genres that had shorter life spans. Whether it was new wave or heavy metal in the 80s, or alternative rock in the 90s, none of them were as big for as long as indie rock this past decade, let alone as expansive.
With so many bands that were strong at the beginning of the decade still producing quality music, it’s clear that the indie genre is far more expansive than nearly any musical movement we’ve seen in quite some time.
As far as the definition of indie rock is concerned, you might get a different answer if you ask any single music lover. Some would say that it’s a frame of mind, and some might be more technical in saying that it means the band is signed to an independent label – or no label at all.
Maybe it just has to do with the creativity and the lack of regard for producing music that was made for radios and top 40 playlists.
The inventiveness remains strong and many bands continue to polish their sounds, chartering into musical territory that’s never been explored before.
This is a great thing for music fans, as the wide variety of creative music is really a pleasure to all with an interest in music. It should be interesting to see where things continue to go from here as they evolve.
Just as classic rock made a deep footprint in the’60s and the’70s, indie rock may very well define the next decade too.
