Funeral directors, more widely known as undertakers, are professionals who manage ceremonies and activities connected with funeral rites. Listed below are skills and qualities undertakers need to be able to succeed in this field of work.

An undertaker\’s job demands working odd hours, and as such, must be ready to be on call for 24 hours as services are required. He must also be ready to spend a lot of his time outside because of this task.

Undertakers must be dignified by nature and practise seriousness, but should not look sad or morose, as this may heighten the grief of the family members of the deceased.

Expertise of different religious customs, rituals and beliefs and due respect for these helps undertakers find success in their profession. As various people follow various funeral customs and methods, it is better to have knowledge of these.

Excellent management and the ability to organise are essential skills for an undertaker. Many services will need to be arranged by the undertaker and this will require good cooperation and managerial skills from the undertaker.

An undertaker should be proficient in legal matters and must know the official procedures to be followed, or the necessary approvals required from the State authorities before conducting funeral ceremonies. He must also be conscious of the administrative procedures to be followed for procuring insurance claims, death certificates etc.

Finally, he must essentially be able to and be eligible to drive vehicles like limousines and hearses during the funeral ceremony.
