Anxiety Attacks? What are They?
We all have to deal with a certain level of anxiety in our life. In a way, minor anxiety is not a bad thing. However, when anxiety levels reach a significant level, there will be physical manifestations of this psychological problem. The most common (and severe) physical reaction is that of a panic attack.
For the most part, a panic attack occurs with virtually no prior warning when one experiences a sever amount of anxiety and you can be rest assured, there’s no mistaking the symptoms. These include rapid breathing, dizziness and even chest pains. In fact, the symptoms of a panic attack are extremely similar to those which are experienced with a heart attack, thus often causing victims to think that’s what’s happening.
Of course, the onset of such an attack can result in a great deal of fear for the individual experiencing it. (The reason why it’s called a panic attack) As a result, a person who experiences severe and frequent panic attacks can suffer a huge loss in the quality of life. This is primarily because those who are experiencing frequent panic attacks will be limited in the activities they do, due to the threat of the condition always being present.
The root cause of panic attacks is somewhat shrouded in mystery. This should come as no surprise since anxiety and panic attack originate in the mind which is not a tangible entity. However, search does show that there are certain factors that can contribute to a panic attack. Depression, pent up frustration, genetic factors, the use of alcohol and drugs are all factors that can lead to the onset of panic attacks.
When a panic attack occurs, it becomes necessary to take the steps needed to reduce the impact of the condition. Yes, this may sound like an “easier said than done” statement but it is necessary to try and reduce the problem as it occurs. Generally, taking slow and deep breaths is the most adhered to method for reducing the impact as it happens.
Of course, if anxiety and the resultant panic attacks could be controlled simply by doing a few breathing exercises, anxiety would not be considered a problem in the first place. In other words, if you suffer from anxiety, it’s crucial that you consult with a duly qualified health professional in order to receive adequate treatment.
Although anxiety and panic attacks can often be treated with therapy alone, it does sometimes become necessary to incorporate medication as well. Of course, before a psychiatrist will prescribe any form of psychotropic drugs, they will first do a thorough evaluation. Contrary to what some may like to believe, these drugs produce outstanding results with regards to reducing the frequency and severity of panic attacks.
Regardless of the method you explore, it is possible to get a handle on issues related to panic attacks. While the condition is most definitely severe, it is not untreatable. As long as you can recognize the problem you will be able to seek help. Once you seek help you can take the steps to deal with it and, hopefully, be free of it.
