Building a Koi Pond Can Be Fun and Easy
If you have been thinking about a Koi pond but are afraid it may be too difficult to consider, think again it really is not as difficult as you think. A Koi pond can be a beautiful enhancement to your garden and if you build and maintain it properly you will have a pond to be proud of for many years.
When you are considering the size, you want to be sure that you give the Koi enough room to grow and multiply. Certainly you do not want to have overcrowding in your pond. But be careful that you do not choose a pond that is too big to maintain. The pond should ideally be filtered at least once every three hours and that can be very expensive on a large pond. There may be times when you need to add medication to the water; too much room is just a waste of money.
Shape is also very important in your Koi pond. The best designs are often the most simple. It is important to avoid areas that do not allow for good water movement. You loose the space for the fish and stagnant water encourages the spread of disease. A flat bottom pond will require a lot of vacuuming because all the debris falls to the bottom and stays there. A pond that slopes from the top toward the drain requires little to no vacuuming.
While Koi do fine in either sun or shade; the shade is actually the best for your pond. The shade helps to slow algae growth. It also helps to keep the water from becoming too hot in the summer sun. It is fine to build in the sun; you will just need to add some type of shade for a least a part of the pond. Be sure that you give careful consideration to where you want to put the pond and the shape you choose.
Depth is very important in a pond. It should be at least three to four feet deep. Koi fish love to swim up and down in a pond and if you want happy, healthy fish you should have an area in the pond that is at least six feet deep. And do not have any areas shallower than two feet deep. It is best to have a pond with steep sides to help keep predators from attacking your fish.
Plants in the pond can be a bad idea. Water plants can carry parasites and once they get into your pond, they can be very difficult to get rid of. A better idea may be to surround the pond with plants. There are many creative ways to make the edge of your pond look beautiful and inviting.
If you are considering adding lights, do it while you are installing the pond. Just remember the reason you are adding lights is so that you can see the Koi, so be sure that you add enough. If you place the lights are different angles around the pond, you will be able to light up the whole pond, allowing you to see the fish much better.
It really does not matter which shape you choose for your pond or what types of plants you decide on. As long as you concentrate on keeping your Koi pond clean and healthy you will be able to enjoy your Koi pond and the fish for many years.
