Significance Of The Christian Funeral Service And Ceremony

Written by Frank Brown on Nov 20th, 2009 | Filed under: Religion

Christian funeral service for any god-fearing Christian means a celebration of the soul\’s eternal journey to the life after death. Funeral services and rituals are alleviating, owing to the strong belief that the departed soul has at last found an eternal home in God\’s place.

Christians believe death to be an entry into the world of continual bliss and exit from this world of grief and suffering. The intensity of pain caused by the death of a near and dear one is lessened by the very thought that the deceased is enjoying a blissful afterlife in the Lord\’s home with God Himself. The Christian funeral ceremony is conducted accordingly and with the same spirit.

Generally, a pastor is the main officiator at a Christian funeral ceremony. The services are mostly conducted inside the very church that the deceased used to visit when he was alive. Though a casket is not used in the service usually, but when it is being held inside a funeral home, casket is usually present. Traditional Christian funeral service does not have the practice of displaying the body of the dead person.

The rituals in such a funeral ceremony are similar to a memorial, in which devotional hymns and prayers are sung and lines from Holy Scriptures are read out loud. After this comes a short elocution from the priest and then a mass prayer by all those who have gathered there.

Next comes the time of reflection and sharing grief by friends and family members, when the people assembled express their sentiments about the dead person and speak of how the deceased has touched their lives and has left a deep impression. People nowadays do a slide show of photos or play a pre-recorded video of the deceased taken when he was alive.

The ceremony eventually ends with a short fellowship reception at the church, where refreshments are served. People do not choose a graveside service generally, but there are some exceptional cases.
