Christian Funeral Service – Significance And Ceremony
For Christians, a funeral service marks the beginning of the soul’s journey to the eternal life after death. This is the primary reason why such services are uplifting as they are looked upon as a confirmation of the belief that the deceased has found a new home in the House of God.
Christianity considers death as an entry into new life, wherein the soul is freed from the world of suffering to the world of eternal bliss. The intensity of grief caused by the death of a loved one is alleviated by the comforting thought that the deceased is enjoying a blissful afterlife in the Lord’s home with the Lord Himself. The Christian funeral ceremonies are performed by the Christians keeping these beliefs in mind.
Generally, a priest is the prime official at a Christian funeral service. The services are mostly conducted inside the very church that the deceased used to visit during his lifetime. Generally there is no casket in the service, but there are exceptions to this, especially when the service takes place in a funeral home. Usually, Christian funeral service does not have the practice of exhibiting the body of the dead person.
The funeral ceremony is conducted in the memory of the departed, and it starts with singing of religious hymns and recitals from the Bible and Holy Scriptures. Then the pastor delivers a message and the people follow with a mass prayer.
Then the assembled people share the grief of the family as well as close friends and talk about their personal feelings as to how the dead person has influenced them and left a permanent impression in their minds. Nowadays, people do a visual display of pictures or play a recorded video of the deceased taken during his or her lifetime.
The last step in the service is that of a brief reception that is conducted inside the church itself and some food is served. A graveside service is not very common, though some people do opt for that too.
