Collecting Stamps – Your First Album Collection
Collecting stuff can be real fun and rewarding if your efforts get appreciated by people. There are people, who collect cars, toys, dolls and some go for stamp collection.
It is important to identify the kind of stamps you want to collect before starting a stamp collection. It is better to collect a certain kind of stamp instead of going for any kind. You can collect stamps according to their purpose, type, condition and format.
On an average, more than ten thousand stamps are being issued every year. It is an impossible task to collect every stamp. Therefore, mark a particular country as your main source of collecting stamps.
Collecting stamps from your own country will be a beneficial and much economical affair since there will be an easy accessibility. Else, you can also choose a neighboring country or any other place, which is easily accessible. The financial resources you have will also play an important role in stamp collection.
You can also collect stamps, which have objects like birds, places or ships depicted on them. On the other hand, collect stamps, which are red, blue, or any other in color. You can also choose between new or used stamps. It is important for you to have a well spread distribution network, if you want your hobby of stamp collection come good.
It is important to have money for this particular hobby but that is not the only thing you need. If you are short of money and still want to collect stamps, go for used stamps, which are available for free. Ask your family members, friends and relatives to give you the stamps that are stuck to the post they get. Or, you can even ask your pen friends, if you have few from different countries, for some used stamps.
Blindly tearing off the stamp from envelope should not be done. Instead, employ the special methods that are devised by stamp collectors.
In case you have money, you can always contact your nearest stamp dealer for buying new stamps. You can also join stamp collectors club, which will give you an opportunity to exchange stamps with other collectors.
It is important to have basic stamp collecting tools before you begin to collect stamps. Some of the tools you need are stamp album, hinges, tongs, a perforation gauge, a watermark sensing device and a magnifying glass.
You can also keep the stamps in an album once you collect them in good numbers. You can also use hinges for mounting the stamps in an album.
However, make sure that your stamps are not mounted by adhesive tapes or glues as these can damage the stamps. In the absence of plastic dividers in your album, you can also use mounts or hinges to keep your stamp separated.
Handle the stamps with care. Don’t use your dirty or sweaty hands for handling the stamps, rather use tongs. Even if you are washing your hands before handling the stamp, the moisture can still spill on the stamps and can damage them.
Keep a magnifying glass with you as well. It will help you to know your stamp better. You might find all the stamps similar when you see them through naked eyes, but with the help of magnifying glass, you might some small but significant difference.
Don’t get engrossed in technicalities involved in this hobby as it is done mainly for enjoyment. However, once you become expert at this work, you can easily make money out of it. But the most important thing is to enjoy what you do.
