Crush Your Procrastination Habits
Who among us has never procrastinated? The first time you procrastinated was probably in school when you did a project or paper at the last minute or tried to cram for an exam. It’s not easy to overcome procrastination, but it is a habit you can unlearn, just like you learned it.
The only way to solve the problem is to first admit you have a problem. Then, you have to determine that you want to solve the problem, no matter what it takes. If that is you, than repeat after me, “I procrastinate. I will do whatever I must in order to shed this habit.” Good for you! This is the first step toward a “get it done” attitude.
There are three main reasons we procrastinate. First, we don’t like to do unpleasant things. Secondly, there is usually something else we’d prefer to be doing. Finally, we put off tasks that seem overwhelming.
You may be able to justify your procrastination a thousand different ways. Leaning on these excuses for procrastination may have become normal for you. It’s time to find a way to get around the reasons you procrastinate.
If there is something you absolutely do not want to do, then you need to give yourself some motivation to get the job done. Plan a reward for yourself. In other words, if you make it to the dentist promise yourself a shopping trip. Another solution to this problem is to find someone who will nag you to death until you get the job done.
If you really want to do something else, then make that your reward for doing the task you are avoiding. Find a way to gratify yourself. Immediate gratification seems to work wonders as a motivator for overcoming procrastination.
When a task overwhelms you break it up into small units. This is an extremely effective way to stop procrastinating. Smaller units of a big job can make it seen more achievable.
Procrastination seems like a never-ending battle, but you can overcome it. Here are a few more tips you can use.
You can set a schedule and stick to it, practicing time management and organizational skills as you follow it. Nothing works as well as a well planned day. When a task takes too long stop, add it to tomorrow’s list, and move on. There is no miracle cure for procrastination, but you’ll find yourself doing procrastinating less following these tips.
