Customs And Rituals Followed In A Buddhist Funeral
In a Buddhist funeral, the followers of the religion are particular about performing elaborate rites and ceremonies during the funeral service. The funeral ceremony, according to Buddhism, signifies the liberation of the deceased’s soul, which was trapped in the futility of existence, and its search for a new life thereafter.
Monks are invited to perform the ceremonies and rituals during a Buddhist funeral, that usually ends with cremation. When a person has died, Buddhist monks recite verses from holy books to allow the good energies to be set free from the soul. To prevent any decomposition in case of a late cremation, the deceased’s body is prepared cautiously while the religious chanting is being performed. After washing the body, it is placed in a coffin with candles, bouquets, fragrant incense sticks and a picture of the deceased person.
The Abhidharma, a holy Buddhist text is read everyday by visiting Buddhist monks during the funeral days even when the cremation is delayed to accommodate the visitors from far away places.
The monks finish the last rites on the day of the funeral and the head priest delivers a speech mentioning the good deeds and actions carried out by the deceased and comforting the grieving family members and friends. Other rituals like wrapping the casket with a white cloth during the religious incantation and Pansakula, a custom of delivering virtues and blessings to the soul of the deceased are also carried out.
Just before the cremation, a close member of the family is asked to say something about the departed individual. The Buddhist funeral services end with a special meal for the visitors immediately after the funeral.
Some alterations in the specific rituals may be found in different cultures, but these are the important rituals followed during a Buddhist funeral in many countries like China, Thailand, and Tibet by the followers of the religion.
