Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes

The above, rather eloquent quote, taken from Conwell’s classic book Acres of Diamonds makes it completely clear in that he does recognise that there are things in life that are more important than wealth. Money, he says is a means, not an end. Getting rich is not enriching when it is pursued as an end, but as a means, it opens the door to many possibilities.
Many people criticised Conwell’s attitude to money on the grounds of what the Bible apparently said about money. Conwell, who was a Baptist minister, would always correct their frequently mis-quoted text that ‘the love of money is the root of all evil’.
His most famous work on the subject, Acres of Diamonds deals with opportunity and where it might be found. Using a number of apparently true and very interesting stories illustrating how people have missed opportunity, he suggests that becoming wealthy or not, as the case may be, may simply be a matter of recognising opportunities that lay before us.
Told as a parable, or learning story, the book provides the lesson that you may be literally surrounded ” right where you are, right now ” with diamonds, but unless you know what a diamond-in-the-rough actually looks like, maybe you will still die poor. It is a powerful message that he was invited to deliver repeatedly to different congregations. He once commented that the lecture was ‘the most popular of any lecture I have delivered in the fifty-seven years of my public life’.
A classic inspirational text, today, the book remains amazingly fresh and vital. A must-read for anyone looking to achieve real success in life, it is a very enjoyable book and perhaps one of the best self-development texts I have ever read.
