Feng Shui – What Is It

Written by Adrian McCluskey on Oct 14th, 2009 | Filed under: Spirituality

To Western ears, it may sound like the name of an exotic oriental recipe but, in reality feng shui is an ancient art of bringing harmony and serenity to your home or workplace. You benefit from this in many ways so read on below to find out exactly what these two words mean.

Feng shui is a spiritual system that began in ancient China about 3,000 years ago. There are many complex notions that go into feng shui but a simple paring down of the philosophy has become popular in the Western hemisphere today. Basically, feng shui revolves around the chi or energy that surrounds all life.

In literal translation, feng shui means wind and water. In China, these concepts are both associated with good health and prosperity. Use the basic principles of feng shui to ensure good chi flowing through your home or office.

Every room in your home has its own energy flow. In order to create a positive feel to a room, energy must be able to flow freely throughout the space. Would you have guessed that your bathroom has an energy flow? It contains many different things but by following the ideologies of feng shui, we see that even the lowly bathroom has the ability to place a serene calm on members of your family.

Practitioners of feng shui use a couple of basic tools to get started. The first tool is the compass. A compass in the woods lets you know which way is up and guides you in the right direction. The same goes for the feng shui compass also called lopan. The compass gives the practitioner a deeper sense of the energy in the home and what needs to be where in order to allow the energy to flow without restraint.

Different areas and rooms of your home or office have different feng shui needs. Correct use of the compass will help decide what colors and feng shui elements should be used. The lopan will take into account what element is most important to individuals in the home.

The compass looks similar to a compass you would use while hiking. There is a compass needle in the center. The compass itself consists of several concentric circles that guide the practitioner to give you a layout of what your home needs in order to be whole again.

The other feng shui tool is called the bagua. You can use a blueprint or scale drawing of your home to layout an energy map. There will be eight sections: North, Northwest, South, Southeast, East, Northeast and West, Southwest. Each area will have a governing feng shui purpose, element and color in your life.

The ideology behind feng shui says you have the ability to affect the energy around you by creating space that is more favorable to your own life. To do this, you must know the five elements of feng shui, the feng shui colors and just how the energy actually moves through each room.

Next time I’ll get into that.
