Funeral Customs Among Christians
A funeral can either be a family or a State ceremony, and it is conducted in the memory of the departed person. It involves a number of rites and rituals that are specific to the culture of the dead person.
A majority of Christian funerals have rituals that can be categorized into three types of events – visitation, funeral and burial. The funeral and visitation ceremonies have a lot more significance as far as ritualistic aspects are concerned and they are discussed here.
The first and foremost part is visitation in which the body is put in a casket for friends and relatives to see and pay their last respects to the departed. The body is often adorned with the best clothes and jewellery belonging to the deceased. Some cultures follow the rite of embalming the body, though not all cultures are bound to do it.
Some families prefer displaying memories from the life of the deceased at visitation in the form of photographs and personal articles that were prized possessions of the deceased. Some families also run a video or slideshow from the deceased\’s lifetime.
The visitation is followed by the next service, the memorial service, also called funeral, and it is carried out in a church. The casket containing the dead body is placed in a hearse and carried to the church along with a group of mourners, who accompany the carriage. The casket with its floral arrangement is then housed in the church.
Funeral services usually include prayers and recitals from the Holy Scriptures and the Bible. Devotional songs are also sung by the mourners in chorus. Then the presiding pastor gives a speech, which is closely followed by tributes given by the family members and friends of the deceased elaborating upon the life, accomplishments and good nature of the deceased. Quite often, the people assembled are permitted to see the dead body for one last time before it is taken for burial. Church bells may be rung both before and after the service.
Once the first two services are over, the body is taken into a vehicle for burial that comprises the third part of the rituals.
