God’s Blessings In the Lives of His People
There is a story going around right now that I find very humorous. There were three sons who wanted to help their mom celebrate her 70th birthday. They knew she had had a hard life working long hours, working diligently to bring them up and educate them, and all three of them had done well financially.
The first of the three brothers told the other two, “I purchased a brand new home for Mother’s birthday. She’ll love it! It has all of the great features that she’s always wanted.
The second son said, “Well, I bought her a Mercedes in her favorite color.”
The third son took a different approach. He told his brothers, “You know how mom loves to read the Bible, so I got her a parrot that can recite any verse from the Bible. It’s a very expensive bird that was trained for 12 years to be able to do this.”
The mother’s birthday soon came and she received a wonderful gift from each of her sons. She wrote a short note to each of them to show her gratitude. The note to the first son said, “Thanks for the house, it’s wonderful. I never thought I would have such a beautiful home.”
To the second son she wrote, “Thank you for the car. It’s just great to be able to have a dependable vehicle and one that is so nice. I couldn’t imagine having that wonderful of a vehicle ever in my life.”
The note to the third son read, “Thank you for the chicken. It tasted great.”
It’s clear that the mother misunderstood the youngest son’s gift and she really never saw it for what it truly was. I think the rest of us do the same things at times. You and I have probably missed out on so many great blessings in our lives because we just haven’t had the proper perspective at times to see the blessings that are in front of us.
Luke chapter two tells us of an amazing story. God promised Simeon that he would not be taken until he had witnessed the Messiah. Eight days following the birth of Christ, Mary and Joseph took baby Jesus to the temple, and Simeon was there waiting.
He recognized immediately that this was the Christ-Child, the One for whom he had waited, and he rejoiced. He took the baby into his arms, and he praised God saying, “Lord, now you are letting Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word.”
Simeon waited on the Lord, and when time for the blessing came he was ready. This causes me to ponder how many times I may have missed out on a tremendous blessing because of my own lack of readiness.
My challenge to you is to talk to God each day and ask for His help to see the blessings that He is putting in your life. Ask for His help to recognize the ways that He blesses you, and I think you will be amazed at how many blessings you see.
