Feeling like a prisoner in a windowless office all day, dreaming of tropical weather, sunshine, beaches and open water? Enjoy ocean fishing or have you always wanted to try it? Consider taking a Costa Rica vacation this year because Costa Rica fishing is among the best in the world. There are many different species of fish to catch as Costa Rica is bordered by both the warm Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Of course, you can always just fish close to home. A trout weighing one whole pound can be fun to catch. Three minutes of fighting the little guy after two hours of sitting over the ice. Now, consider catching the little trout’s cousin (literally, its cousin), the great marlin, weighing in at hundreds of pounds and battling you for three-and-a-half hours!

Along the North Pacific coast, the areas of Flamingo and Tamarindo offer the most popular Costa Rica fishing spots. There, sailfish can be caught throughout the entire year but for the best fishing, plan between May and August . Tuna are abundant here during August to October. It is not uncommon to see tuna schools of 40 to 60 pounders as well as groups with some fishing tipping the scales at 200 to 400 pounds. The bay of Papagayo from November to March is a great place to catch roosterfish. They tend to like shorelines and are usually caught in around 60 feet of water. Large marlin, colorful dorado, and wahoo can also be caught here at different times of the year.

Many people fishing in Costa Rica are looking for billfish and these beauties are most plentiful along the Central Pacific coast. Go to luxurious Los Suenos Marina or Quepos and charter into the offshore waters for sailfish and marlin. December through April is the best time to catch these fighters. The vibrant dorado fish is often found here May to October while trolling. Closer to shore, folks commonly catch snapper, snook, roosterfish, and wahoo. Tuna are offshore.

Golfo Dulce, Drake Bay, and Puerto Jiminez are places to be aware of when fishing along the South Pacific coast down to Panama. In the months where the waters are warmer, you have a great chance at hooking sailfish and large marlin. For the best inland fishing in the country, go to the Golfo Dulce area. It is a haven for many varieties of fish because of its rocky bottom and many coves. You will find barracuda, grouper, delicious sea bass, snapper, amberjack, wahoo, and even roosters here. Bring your camera!

Five hundred years ago, a captain named Columbus landed in the Caribbean waters off Costa Rica and gave the country its name. Fish of every type filled the waters, millions of sea turtles came ashore to nest, and wildlife was incredibly common. When you travel to the prominent fishing centers of Barra del Colorado and Tortuguero, you will be just as thrilled as Columbus. These waters can often be extremely turbulent and for the best results should be generally avoided during rainy season. But, on calm, this region can provide some of the best fishing anywhere. You will find the large and spectacular tarpon fish fighting fish from May to November. These waters are also one of the very few places a lucky fisherman might catch the rare Atlantic sail. Snook (some really big) are abundant here. You could also catch Jack Crevalle, tripletail, giant grouper, or guapote.
