Of all the activities you can do, hiking may be one of a handful that really improve your mental, physical and spiritual health. It also provides a welcome break from your everyday madness.
I make the time to put three or four trail miles under my feet at least twice a week. No need to plan an elaborate vacation around hiking, although I have. There are likely to be countless opportunities closer than you think. The state parks where I live are excellent.
Mentally, hiking gives you the space and time to figure things out. We get so involved with what’s happening in our lives that we lack the clarity to make good decisions. Take that time to think, or avoid thinking entirely. If you immerse yourself in the backcountry and shut up long enough to hear nature, something wonderful starts to happen.
After completing a challenging section of trail, you may find you feel that there’s nothing you cannot accomplish. You will encounter various obstacles and different types of terrain, putting the minor difficulties of everyday life in perspective.

Experiencing nature, you may find yourself taking more responsibility for our earth’s precious natural resources. This helps us make better decisions for our childrens future and the future of our planet. Spiritually, we are of the earth.
As a family activity, I can’t think of anything more exciting than outdoor adventure. Memories created in the outdoors among friends are the most vivid, colorful and enduring.
