How To Be A Good Public Speaker

Written by Carol Cheung on Feb 9th, 2010 | Filed under: Motivation

Can you still remember the time you first started working in the business world and presented a speech in front of lots of people? Did you lose your breath suddenly? Did you slur your words or lose all your thoughts? If your answers to the above questions are yes, then you might need some public speaking help!

After you get enough practice of public speaking, you certainly will feel confident and even urge to step on stage for presenting speech! You will enjoy speaking in front of large group of people, as well as helping others to overcome the fear of public speaking too.

I started to love public speaking after going through a couple of things that changed my impression of public speaking. I went to conferences a lot and used the presentations and workshops there as my role models. After watching and studying them, I imitated their techniques while doing my own presentations.

When I was speaking on stage, I copied much of their behavior. I found out that being comfortable with yourself, being concentrated and eye contact are essential for a successful public speaking.

Years ago when I was still young in the industry, I often lost my confidence on stage and it always showed. I actually knew the material very well, but when I looked around and saw the audience, I often lost my concentration and my mind just went blank. And when I did not know what to say, I often lost my eye contact with the audience.

What I have mentioned above are never the good points that should be modeled, when anyone want to look professional on stage.

One little trick that I learned to solve the above problem is to focus on one particular person before finishing a sentence or a thought. Using this method, my thinking would not keep wandering around unrelated events. With this concentration, I would be able to talk about my thoughts and experience better.

You could be a successful public speaker if you can concentrate tightly with good eye contact. At that time, you could speak anywhere with any size of audience.
