How to Have a Quiet Time

Written by Dr. Ann Shorb on Jul 10th, 2009 | Filed under: Spirituality

There are two main goals or purposes for having a quiet time with God. First, to praise and worship the Lord. By taking the time daily to worship God you will revel in God and recognize the many ways that He blesses us each day. You can show gratefulness and appreciation for what He has done. God loves to receive praise and worship from His people.

The second purpose of daily devotionals is spiritual growth for yourself. This growth requires us to recognize that we are sinners and that there are areas in our lives that need to be changed. You’ll need to approach God and ask for His forgiveness for these things, and then work to correct them going forward.

Start your time with God each day with some deep breaths that will help to relax yourself and distance yourself from the daily distractions that exist in your life. Ask for God’s help in removing the distractions so that you can focus on Him and His Word. This will help to prepare you for a more effective time with God.

Ask God to clean your heart prior to your devotions.

Offer God praise and worship. You might sing a hymn or praise chorus, or read a Psalm of adoration. Count your blessings. Recite a poem that praises the great Creator. There are many ways to praise God. Be creative. He loves your worship!

Read and study Scripture, or read from a devotional book.

As you read God’s Word, it is important to also try to really comprehend what the passage is saying to you. How does this passage fit into it’s overall context? Who was it written for? What are the main messages that are being communicated? How does this message apply to you? What can you do in you own life to put this teaching into practice.

How can this impact you as you live each day? What can you do differently in your life that will demonstrate the impact of this passage on you? It’s a good idea to write down some of your thoughts during your devotions because it will help you to remember.

Speak to God in prayer.

Pray is a difficult thing for many people. Here is a simple acrostic that can help you – ACTSS. A – Adoration. Praise and worship God for who He is and what He does. C – Confession. Admit and repent of your sins. T – Thanksgiving – Thank God for the things He does for you. S – Supplication. Ask God to meet your needs each day. S – Silence. Stop and just listen to God.

The final thing you should do in your devotional time is ask God to help you remember the things that you have just learned.
