Ideas For Motivating Students
The two main types of motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic, are an important part of the process of learning. Intrinsic motivation derives from an inherent interest in what is being learnt, extrinsic motivation refers to external influences.
While some students have their own intrinsic motivation or external motivation, others must be motivated to learn. There are many things that teachers can do so as to motivate their students to learn. Here are several strategies that can be used to motivate students.
- Provide a supportive environment and build trust by greeting students, interacting with them and showing a personal concern about them as individuals.
- Highlight the links between the amount of effort put in and the resulting outcome.
- Regularly remind them that the learning process is something that requires patience, and that results may take time to see.
- Divide the process of learning into manageable pieces for students to take in.
- Minimize students performance anxiety during study activities.
- Ensure that learning tasks given provide a suitable challenge to the students. They must not be either too difficult or too easy.
- Weak learners are used to seeing failure so they must be guided to experience success more regularly.
- Students will be more likely to want to learn if they have a greater appreciation of the value of what they are learning, and when they believe that they will succeed by applying reasonable effort.
The teachers attitude is also key in relation to dealing with students. It refers to everything that a teacher says or does in the classroom. It pertains to a teachers approach, awareness and understanding.
Teacher’s should develop an action plan in terms of their relationship with their students. It should be flexible, measurable and realistic. Whilst it would be beneficial to write this down, it is most important to have it set in their mind; whichever, they should be sure to adhere to it.
