Is Halloween Really Just For Kids?

Written by Benedict Fisher on Jul 4th, 2009 | Filed under: Religion

Halloween is widely celebrated by families in North America. People young and old like the idea of dressing up, trick-or-treating, and partying in costumes. But many believe that Halloween is an event for children, most probably because Halloween is a celebration of ghouls, ghosts, goblins, and great family relationships.

H is for Halloween and the Harvest

Way back before Hollywood-inspired costumes arrived, rural American farmers would open their land to hunters during Halloween. Halloween was a significant time of the year for hunters because it was when the hunting season started. Trekkers and travelers would also start to fill up the immaculate lands in the northeastern regions of the United States.

Other times were but a footnote compared to the harvest period in the 19th century mythology in the United States. And various folk tales were often told as the harvest season loomed.

Trick or treat!

For a while, people were afraid of trick or treat sojourns into the night because of urban legends. These urban legends included:

- People who placed rusted razors into candied apples

- Children were given spoiled candies.

It was in the late nineties that the percentage of homes that gave out candies during Halloween began to increase. It was a good sign for kids and a better sign for adults everywhere. A higher percentage of people who still believed in trick or treat meant kids were safer to go out at night in their neighborhoods.

A lot of people believe that the tradition of trick-or-treating strengthens the bonds between neighbors. If your children can be safe outside at night, watched carefully by grown-ups expecting tiny knocks on the door, it means you are in a good neighborhood filled with dependable people.

The Academe and Halloween

One of the most eminent American-cultured powerhouses is the unlikely school. During the time when conservative groups started losing grip on Halloween celebrations, schools started to support gatherings during fall. Such events encompassed:

- Halloween processions

- Halloween gatherings

Sadly, in the last few years, Halloween has changed into a commercialized event instead of an opportunity to keep strong relationships and renew solidarity in the neighborhood. Also, it has become less of a chance to spend time with great friends and family.

Big bucks!

Apart from being a traditional time for the spooky things, large companies are finding more and more reasons to smile during the festivities. Childrens festival is an understatement; the candy industry makes sure that the festival can be enjoyed yearlong.

From simple sweets and treats formed molded from several spooky characters like Count Dracula, Werewolves, fangs and snakes, to other children’s novelties, Halloween has erally turned into a commercialized event.

An estimated income of $950 million a year is brought in by all products related to Halloween. Most of these products sold during this season are little toys and candies. It is thought that this may be a good thing, since it’s a way of training children to become wise shoppers when they become adults.

Well, that’s Halloween today – play for children, and work for adults.
