It’s in the Bag-or Box
Before you start packing for your move, survey your belongings to get a feel for what kinds of storage containers will best meet your needs. Gather up strapping tape, permanent markers, and adhesive labels to keep track of what’s inside.
Boxes make sense for moving because of their uniform size and relative strength. As long as you pack them fully, and make sure boxes with fragile items are put on top, you can stack them as high and deep as your moving van will allow.
Buying boxes from hardware or home stores is a good way to be sure your boxes are nice and sturdy, but the more you have to pack, the more expensive it will be. If you have items that must be packed in identical cartons, go ahead and purchase boxes; otherwise look for free sources such as borrowing from friends or asking at stores for boxes that are going to be tossed out.
Kitchen and lawn bags are a great choice for light, irregular-shaped items such as children’s’ stuffed toys. Because of the possibility of rips and snags, however, heavy and sharp-edged items should not be packed in these kinds of bags.
Garment bags, on the other hand, are much sturdier, and help repel moisture and insects. They’re a great choice for out-of-season clothing and linens. Even though they may be expensive, you can use them for storage as well as packing, and they should last for years.
Don’t forget about your luggage when looking for containers. You have to move it anyway, so why not put it to good use and fill it up before you load it on the truck.
Sketch a diagram of the interior of your moving van and map out where you’ll be placing your boxes, bags, furniture and other items. This will help you ensure that you have enough space for all of your belongings, and also help you determine the best placement to make the most of the space in your van.
