A Look at Beauty: Past and Current
Beauty has been desired by women throughout the ages. Beauty is the thing that attracts men. Beauty opens doors that are closed to the \’ugly\’. Eve of the Old Testament was the beautiful temptress. Delilah and Cleopatra each used their beauty to wield power over men.
Concepts of beauty have evolved over time even though the desire to be beautiful has remained the same as always. In the past, European women carried parasols whenever they went outdoors. These were not just a fashion accessory but had the very functional purpose of keeping the sun off the female\’s skin in order to preserve her looks. White skin was the ideal; any hint of a tan was considered lower class and decidedly unbecoming. Ladies would pinch their cheeks in order to make them look rosy as was considered beautiful at the time.
Today, the modern counterparts of these women crave the sun as the sun-kissed look is now considered beautiful. There is a huge business in tanning lotions for sunbathing and there is also a huge rise in tanning studios for when there is no sun to bathe in.
European ideals of beauty became Western ideals and very quickly got tied up with race and natural complexion. Black women were in the unenviable position of never being able to match up to the beauty standards. They would bleach their skins in order to look a little more white and a little more beautiful. The \’black beauty\’ movement of the 1970\’s challenged the pre-existing beauty norm and went a long way in changing the African-American concept of themselves and their beauty.
Today things have changed drastically. Anyone regardless of race can be considered gorgeous. Indeed, some of the modern beauty icons are black women including Tyra Banks, Halle Berry and Michelle Obama. Beauty relies much more on a clear complexion and youthful skin. There are certain standards that must be reached to possess Hollywood style looks. These include bright white teeth, perfect but understated makeup and a wardrobe to befit.
One thing that has not changed about Western concepts of looks is the desired skinny physique of a woman. It has never really been acceptable for a woman to be seen as over weight. In the old days women were forced to strap themselves into tight corsets which were often the culprit for distorted physical development. Slimness is still the ideal target and any beauty conscious women must take care of her weight.
Fashion goes hand in hand with concepts of looks. The corseted and bustled dresses were designed to give an impression of voluptuousness contained in slimness. In the 1960\’s mini skirts were designed to accentuate a woman\’s slender legs while modern designs emphasize flat abdomens.
If you try to fit in with modern ideals of beauty then you know that age is perhaps the biggest obstacle to overcome. Youth and beauty go hand in hand. There is no room for mature or wrinkled looking skin. Middle aged women are only celebrated for their beauty if they have managed to remain younger looking than their years. A massive industry exists to help women pursue this crucial element of beauty and where anti wrinkle products fail, cosmetics and cosmetic surgery might possibly provide the solution for today\’s beauty conscious women.
