Looking Back At Outdoor Christmas Lights Beginnings

Written by Cody Scholberg on Oct 26th, 2009 | Filed under: Culture

How long ago were they invented?

Does the name of Thomas Edison sound familiar? Of course, it does. He was the man who in 1880 invented the incandescent light bulb. During that Christmas, his was the first place to be adorned with Christmas lights. A good friend of Edison’s and co-worker, Edward Johnson, the CEO of Edison’s company made sure that New York City was illuminated that year.

Much publicity was given to Mr. Johnson in the local newspapers at Christmas of 1882. It was that year that he decorated a six foot Christmas tree with sparkling lights. The magazine, “Electric World” also published this noteworthy event and described his as the “handsomest tree in the United States. The New York Times picked up the story In 1884, describing how Mr. Johnson amused his children when he first lit the six foot illuminated tree. Earlier in the previous years, Mr. Edison had invented a motor that Mr. Johnson decided to use to make the tree even more fascinating, by making it revolve on its base.

Some families didn’t get to have Christmas lights right away

Due to the fact that an electrician had to be hired to hook up the new electric tree lights, and because of the high cost of the lights themselves, the majority of families were not able to have the thrill of these lights immediately. Those families continued to use the traditional candles for lighting their Christmas trees. This way of lighting the tree remained until the early 20th century for some.

What had been people’s worst fear occured in New York City in 1917, when the candles caused a tragic fire in a family’s home. After that instance, novelty and electric companies began to manufacture the new electric strings of lights, along with General Electric. By 1930, electric Christmas tree lights were available and affordable for all.

It would indeed seem strange, today, to see a tree lighted with candles, or a Christmas tree inside or out without the sparkling tree lights of the season. From year to year there are new innovations in ways to display lights. For example, many are using the new icicle lights to adorn their roof tops and it makes quite an impressive display. It is expensive to do, however, and quite a task. Therefore, some leave them on the roof year round, but of course, they don’t light them all year.
