Our Trip to Costa Rica

Written by Arthur P. Maxwell on Apr 30th, 2009 | Filed under: Nature

My husband and I are on a two week vacation with our two children, Sage and Reilly. Weve only been here for a day, but already I feel like its been a week. We flew from Southern California to San Jose, Costa Rica, and then took a small twin engine to somewhere on the Nicoya peninsula. We spent the night with some friends that have a beach house here on the peninsula, and we bathed in their incredible salt water pool.

The kids bounced around all evening while Phil and I had drinks on the deck with our friends. This morning we all went horseback riding at sunrise, along the beach. We bathed in the ocean for a quick spell, before the sun became too unbearable, and then returned to the house. In the afternoon we rented a car and drove up to the Gulf of Papagayo and had dinner at a beautiful beach resort. We were going to drive back down tonight, but we decided to check in. Im so glad we did!

The hotel staff here is catering to our every need. They are extremely warm and informative. We just checked in for a night, but we will probably just play it by ear. I’m okay with just taking it easy for a few days, but we’ll see what Phil says. Our room here is great. We toured the gardens and took in night air while the kids played in the pool.

The kids have since taken showers to get the chlorine off of them, ( I much prefer the salt water pools), and are now fast asleep. Phil is watching the big screen TV, while I excitedly plan our trip. I think I have it all planned out, thanks to all of the information the folks at reception provided us. Of course, in the morning I will have to run it by the family to see what they think.

In the morning I’d like to go horseback riding. One option is to ride along the beach at sunrise. Sounds dreamy, no? Another is to ride into the reserve, into both primary and secondary growth forest. We all want to see wild, tropical animals.. parrots, sloths, pumas, anteaters and, of course, monkeys. But I would also just like to spend some quality time with the kids, before they get too old to enjoy spending time with us.

We can all hang out at the pool in the event we decide on staying another night here. Later we can go boating into the sunset and cruise up the coast on a charter boat. It’s unbelievably tropical here. The jungle meets up with the ocean with just a thin strip of beach. Monkeys can be heard from miles away.. and sometimes the sound is smothered by the battle calls of small green parrots that fly around in swarms.

We were also told about a tour where we can go on a night hike thru the reserve to see where the nocturnal animals roam. Tarantulas prowl, hummingbirds sleep, and armadillos dig around the forest floor. I am curious to see what happens in the jungle at night. But the first sign of a mosquito and Im out of there. Ill be right back here in this decadent resort, sipping tea in my bathrobe in no time.
