Primary And Ancillary Duties Of A Funeral Director
A funeral director\’s main task is to make arrangements for the cremation or burial of the deceased and for the particular rituals that are held before the burial.
The essential duties of a funeral director can be categorised into four broad heads, which are shifting the dead body, preparing it for final service, making arrangements for friends and relatives to assemble and pay their final respects to the deceased and finally the actual cremation or burial of the body as per the choice or beliefs of the family.
These responsibilities entail taking care of essential activities like deciding the place and timings of the funeral ceremonies, arranging for a hearse to transport the body, and preparing obituaries and posting them in newspapers or the electronic media. Moreover, the funeral directors also have to make sure that the flowers and decorations are in place. Besides this, they have to make the body ready for the service by washing and embalming it and arrange conveyance for the relatives gathering for the ceremony.
Besides these jobs, a funeral director also takes care of the necessary paperwork that forms a part of the official formalities that follow a person\’s death. He helps the family secure a death certificate. He is also entrusted with other tasks like helping the family with getting the insurance money and to take advantage of seniors\’ burial scheme. He also aids in transferring pension and annuity money, if any, of the deceased to the beneficiaries of the deceased and assists the family in assessing the costs of the whole funeral service.
He also has to coordinate with a wide range of professionals to perform his tasks in a proper and systematic way. He must be able to communicate with physicians, florists, casket makers and priests equally well.
Finally, it is important for funeral directors to come forward and provide some solace to the grieving family on an unofficial level, in order to help them get over the loss of a loved one. Though it is an important aspect of the job, some funeral directors usually consider it a trivial responsibility.
