Rest in The Lord

Written by Ann Shorb on Nov 21st, 2009 | Filed under: Religion

Psalm 55:6 is a terrific verse. It says, “Oh that I had wings like a dove for then I would fly away and be at rest.”

We’ve all felt at times that we just want to get away from everything and everyone. We need rest in these situations. These are the days where nothing seems to go according to plan, and you feel that being absolutely anywhere else would be more restful or peaceful.

Matthew chapter 11 says, “Come unto Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

In this passage we read of a spectacular promise given by God. All we have to do is go to Him and He will provide rest. He doesn’t give us a list of things that we have to do first, or a bunch of stipulations. We just simply need to go to Him for our rest.

Sometimes people ask, “Well, how do I come to the Lord? How can I do that?” We all need to do that at times. We need to come and get physical rest. We need to get spiritual rest, mental rest and emotional rest.

The answer is surprisingly simple. All we need to do to receive God’s promise of rest is to bring ourselves before Him. And since He is omnipresent, there aren’t any barriers. When you are physically tired, rest and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation. Take time to do nothing other than to give your body some rest.

In today’s fast-paced society it is very common to need mental rest. Take some time to get your focus away from work or whatever else is stressing you out. Think about peaceful things and things that you enjoy, it will help you get your metal focus off of whatever is causing the stress for you.

To get emotional rest, focus on things that make you feel at peace. Get your attention away from anything that leads to anxious feelings. Think of things that make you laugh and smile. Come before God in prayer and share your feelings with Him. He already knows your thoughts and feelings, so there is no reason to try and hide anything.

When you are in need of rest, go before God in prayer and praise. Admire His greatness and the things He has done. Sing songs to praise Him. Read and meditate on His Word. Simply put your focus on Him rather than the things in your life that are causing stress and anxiety. He promises to give you the rest you need, and He never breaks a promise.
