Should Insomnia Symptoms Bother You?
At what point do you regard an insomnia symptom as serious?
After family and friends give a lot of urging and encouragement, many people finally and reluctantly seek the help of a medical professional.
Yet when the problem affects a family member or friend, the same individual may be the very one coaxing them to seek medical advice. That’s human nature it seems!
Is there a way to differentiate between a passing problem or a deep underlying problem? In other words, how do you get a balance between just giving it time and making an appointment with a doctor.
The definition of insomnia according to Webster’s dictionary is: “prolonged and usually abnormal inability to obtain adequate sleep.”
Insomnia is categorized by the U.S. National Institute Of Health as:
A temporary sleep problem is known as transient insomnia. It may not persist longer than a few days or a couple of weeks on the outside.
If the temporary sleep problem, lasting just a few days or at the most a couple of weeks, comes back at fairly regular intervals, it is known as intermittent insomnia.
Chronic insomnia is when a person is unable to obtain adequate sleep most nights which goes on for a month and longer.
So with those categories in mind, you can now see where your disturbed sleep pattern fits in.
If it falls into categories 1 and 2 it is unlikely to be serious.
Sleeping tablets and medications or natural remedies can improve sleep duration and quality and make the insomnia symptom disappear.
For example, natural sleeping remedies can include giving attention to bedtime routine, exercise routines, chromotherapy, breathing exercises, music, warm baths, stress relievers, herbs, vitamins, diet, chamomile, valerian, and lavender.
Exploring any of these options may be enough to combat the minor insomnia symptom that is causing concern.
It is widely known of course that any medication can have side effects so a user does well to check with a doctor first, especially if they are already using other forms of medication.
Chronic Insomnia
Chronic insomnia is another story. An ongoing sleep problem can have a major impact on a person’s quality of life, performance at work, and social behavior.
Medical attention is strongly advised for chronic insomnia. A doctor may be able to identify an underlying medical or psychological cause for the insomnia symptom and set out a course of treatment that will deal with it.
This can include, apart from medicine, a number of various therapies such as relaxation, sleep restriction and reconditioning.
In conclusion, if you are concerned about an insomnia symptom, either for yourself or a loved one, make an appraisal of which category it falls into. If it is category 1 or 2, transient or intermittent, it can probably be ignored or overcome with short term sleeping pills or natural remedies.
If it appears however that category 3 describes the insomnia symptom you are experiencing, treat it seriously. Make an appointment with your doctor and deal with it right away.
