The Importance Of Buddhist Funeral Rites

Written by Kim Richards on Nov 13th, 2009 | Filed under: Religion

The fundamental teachings of Lord Buddha form the crux of the Buddhist religion which is the main religion in several parts of the world today. Buddhism calls for compassion and love for mankind and awareness of the Ultimate Truth.

These main tenets of Buddhism are reflected in the rites practised during a Buddhist funeral. After the death of a person in a Buddhist family, some rituals have to be followed in order to ensure that the deceased’s soul rises to a higher stage of life after death. Prayers are chanted calling upon the good energies associated with the deceased for his or her deliverance from this cycle of life.

The first stage in funeral rituals is that of giving the body a traditional wash. The next stage involves presence of monks, who chant from religious scriptures and thereby help the soul in finding eternity. The monks read out those teachings of Lord Buddha that talk about the significance of practising compassion and kindness. Meanwhile, the body is prepared for the last journey. Friends and family members often place some coins in the casket of the deceased person. This is for helping the dead person to pay and wade across the River of Three Hells.

The casket is then put before the altar at home for the loved ones to pay their respects. Attendees are required to pray for the deceased and the family and friends give their condolences. Monks who carry out the rituals continue to chant the appropriate sutras. Once the recital is over, people bow at the altar to pay their last respects. The family members then thank the attendees for sharing their sorrow by distributing gifts to them.

Once these rituals are completed, the family can decide to bury or cremate the deceased according to their family customs. These rites are meant to allow the family to overcome their sorrow by offering prayers that will raise the dead to a higher stage of enlightenment and knowledge.
