The Many Traditions Of Christian Funerals
A funeral is either a State or a family service, held to honor. It involves a set of rites and rituals that vary according to the deceased’s culture and belief system.
Majority of Christian funerals have rituals that can be categorized into three types of events – the visitation, funeral, and finally, the burial. The first 2 parts, which are the most essential ones as far as rites and rituals are concerned, are explained below.
The first and foremost ceremony is visitation wherein the body is laid in a casket for family and friends to see and bid their final adieu to the deceased. The body is often adorned with the best clothes and jewels belonging to the dead person. Some cultures need embalming the body for the occasion, while others don’t.
During the visitation, a family may also display pictures taken of the departed while he was alive, or some precious items that were very close to the dead person. Some families also play a slide show or video of the departed.
The visitation is followed by the second part of rituals, the memorial service, also known as funeral, and it is conducted in a church. The casket with the dead body in it is carried in a vehicle to the church, surrounded by a funeral procession of mourners. The coffin with its floral arrangement is then placed inside the church.
This entails offering of prayers by the attendees and reciting lines from the Bible or Holy Scriptures by the clergy. The mourners or attendees also sing religious songs in chorus. This is followed by a speech by the pastor presiding over the funeral service and tributes by the family and friends, who then share their personal thoughts about the deceased’s life. Sometimes, mourners are allowed to see the deceased for the last time before it is taken for burial. The service is sometimes also followed by ringing church bells.
Once the first two parts of the ceremony are complete, the body is then taken into a vehicle for burial that comprises the last phase of the rituals.
