The Wonders of Ancient Egypt

Written by Gary Ardnt on May 8th, 2009 | Filed under: History

Herodotus, in the 5th Century BC, made the first list of the Wonders of the World. In this he included two of the most magnificent structures in Egypt: the Great Pyramid and the Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria. The Great Pyramid is still standing and the ruins of the Pharos can still be seen in the waters outside the Harbor of Alexandria. When visiting, there are many ancient wonders of Egypt for you to explore. Here are some of the best:

The Nile River: In many respects, the Nile River IS Egypt. Without the Nile there would be no Egypt; modern or ancient. The river is very unique among rivers in the world. As it passes through Egypt it has no tributaries. It is a single channel as it goes from the border of Sudan to the delta. It is about as wide as it enters Egypt, as it is when it passes through Cairo. Make sure to take a sailing trip on a felucca when you are there. There are also overnight cruises available from Luxor to Aswan.

Edfu Temple: The Temple of Edfu is an ancient Egyptian temple located on the west bank of the Nile in the city of Edfu which was known in Greco-Roman times as Apollonopolis Magna, after the chief god Horus-Apollo. It is the second largest temple in Egypt after Karnak and one of the best preserved. The temple, dedicated to the falcon god Horus, was built in the Greek period between 237 and 57 BC. The inscriptions on its walls provide important information on language, myth and religion during the Greco-Roman period in Egypt.

Abu Simbel: Abu Simbel is an archaeological site comprising two temples in southern Egypt on the bank of Lake Nasser about 40 km from the border of Sudan. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temples were originally carved out during the reign of Ramesses II in the 13th century BC, as a monument to himself and his queen Nefertari, to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh, and to intimidate the Nubians. The complex was relocated in its entirety in the 1960s, to avoid their being submerged during the creation of Lake Nasser.

Temple of Karnak: Karnak a vast complex of ruined temples, pillars and other buildings. It is located near Luxor in Egypt. It was the most holy place in Ancient Egypt, the main place of worship of the Theban Triad with Amun as its head. It is the largest temple or temple complex in all of Egypt.

The Sphinx: Beneath the shadow of the Great Pyramid lies the mysterious Sphinx. Buried by sand over the years, the Sphinx was re-discovered by European in the 19th Century. It is the largest monumental sculpture of antiquity in the world today. It can be visited as part of any trip to the Pyramids when in Cairo.
