Traditions And Customs Followed In A Buddhist Funeral

Written by Bariel Tan on Nov 19th, 2009 | Filed under: Religion

Buddhist funeral rituals and traditional ceremonies are replete with religious importance for Buddhists. The funeral service, according to Buddhism, signifies the setting free of the deceased\’s soul, which was trapped in the mundane world of existence, and its quest for a new life thereafter.

The Buddhist funeral services which end with cremation in most cases, are carried out by Buddhist monks with the aid of the bereaved family. After a person has died, Buddhist monks chant from the holy verses which are expected to liberate the soul\’s positive energies. To avoid any decay in case of a late cremation, the deceased\’s body is prepared cautiously while the chanting is going on. The body is washed and laid to rest in a coffin along with fragrance sticks, candles, wreaths and a photo of the deceased person.

If the funeral is deferred by some days for distant relatives to get a last look, the monks go to the dead person\’s home daily and recite verses from the Abhidharma, an important Buddhist holy scripture.

On the occasion of the funeral, monks perform the last rites and their chief gives a brief speech in honour of the dead person highlighting his contributions in life and consoling the aggrieved family that death is destiny. Other rites like wrapping the casket with a white cloth during the religious invocation and Pansakula, a custom of delivering virtues and blessings to the departed soul are also carried out.

Just before the cremation, a close member of the family is requested to say something about the departed individual. Following the cremation, a special meal is organized for the people gathered at the funeral.

Some differences in the specific rituals may be found in various cultures, but these are the important rituals followed during a Buddhist funeral in many countries like Tibet, Thailand, and China by the followers of the faith.
