The Primary And Ancillary Responsibilities Of A Funeral Director

Written by Jeremiah Kendall on Dec 22nd, 2009 | Filed under: Religion

The funeral director is the person that takes care of the arrangements in the cremation or burial of a dead person, including the funeral rites that are held before the burial or cremation.

The important tasks of a funeral director involve moving the body to a mortuary, preparing it for the memorial service, making preparations for the services where friends and family will honor and pay their final respects to the deceased, and carrying out the final procedures on the corpse.

These responsibilities encompass different types of jobs, which include arrangement of a vehicle for carrying the deceased, deliberation on the place and timings for memorial service and also sending obituaries in the local media as well as the newspapers. In addition, funeral directors also look after things like flowers and bouquet arrangements for each service, embalming and clothing the deceased, arrangement for transportation of the family and relatives from one service to another etc.

Besides these jobs, a funeral director has to take care of the job of doing the mandatory paperwork formalities needed following a person’s death. He facilitates obtaining of a death certificate for the deceased. He is also entrusted with other jobs like helping the family members with getting the insurance money and to take benefit of veterans’ burial scheme. He also solves issues related to clearance of pension and annuities of the deceased to the rightful beneficiary and helps the family to estimate a budget for the services.

In addition, a funeral director has to coordinate with many people so that he can do his tasks in an organized way. He should be able to communicate with doctors, florists, coffin makers and priests equally well.

Finally, it is important for funeral directors to work beyond their normal schedule and provide comfort and solace to the suffering family of the deceased, in order to help them tide over their sorrow. Though it is a critical aspect of the profession, a few funeral directors usually consider it a trivial responsibility.
