Many leaders ask themselves, what factors affect motivation. It is important, as a leader, in understanding what motivates others. Throughout the years, there have been several theories on what motivates the general populace. Most agree, however, that when one is motivated, conditions are developed that are believed will help move one to a desired behavior.

To motivate others, there are several ways that you can use.

Through Curiosity: If something is interesting as it is presented to an individual, they may be more willing to go about the work that is needed to be done. Through working, their interest will be satisfied as they are learning more as they go about different tasks.

Then there is motivation through challenges. Most individuals actually like a challenge. If there is a reward that they deem worth it at the end of a hard task, this could motivate them into working hard. This applies in the work force and in their home life.

Through Control:People like to feel as if they are control of their environment and of what they are doing. If they know that once they complete a goal and then know the reward, this can help motivate them to get the work that is needed done. This lets them feel as if they are controlling their outcome.

Motivation through competition is another. There is a satisfaction knowing that you have done just as well or better than the person beside you. This will make a worker strive to continuously do more. Although this works for many people, there are those that do not have a competitive edge and this can actually demotivate them.

Through Recognition: Once an individual’s accomplished work is recognized, this entices them to do more. Their work should be able to be recognized without being compared to another person’s work and be able to receive its own reward. A few words of praise can go a very long way.
