Buddhist Funeral Rites And Their Significances

Written by Vanessa Parks on Dec 19th, 2009 | Filed under: Religion

The basic teachings of the Buddha form the core of the Buddhist religion which is practiced in many countries all over the globe today. This religion requires love and mercy for man and recognition of the Ultimate Truth.

These Buddhist teachings are apparent in the rites seen in a Buddhist funeral. Certain mandatory rites should be followed once a person Buddhist person dies, to ensure that the dead’s soul gets elevated to a higher level in their next lifetime. Prayers are used to invoke the good energies of the deceased, ensuring his or her deliverance from this life and wishing them the best for their next.

A traditional bath to the deceased marks the beginning of the Buddhist funeral rituals. The second stage entails invitation of monks, who chant from religious texts and thereby aid the dead in finding liberation. The teachings of Lord Buddha, which speak about the value of goodness and compassion in life, are read aloud. Meanwhile, the body is prepared for the final rituals. The deceased is normally offered with some coins put in his casket by the family. This is supposed to help the dead person cross the River of Three Hells to reach his destination.

Afterwards, the casket is displayed to the family and friends to enable them to pay their respects by putting it at the altar. The relatives and friends give condolences to the dead person’s family, while the attendees pray for his soul. The priests carrying out the rites keep reciting the sutras as the proceedings move on. After the chanting is over, people present at the ceremony bow at the altar. The family members then thank the attendees for shouldering their sorrow by giving them token gifts.

Once these rituals are over, the family can decide to bury or cremate the deceased based on their family beliefs. The different ceremonies are a way of bringing peace to the family of the departed as they know their prayers are directed towards elevating the status of the departed in his life after death.
