The Significance Of Buddhist Funeral Rites

Written by Shiela Wong on Nov 20th, 2009 | Filed under: Religion

The fundamental teachings of Lord Buddha form the crux of the Buddhist religion which is the main religion in many parts of the world today. Buddhism entails quest for the Ultimate Truth as well as a spirit of compassion and true love for every creature.

These basic principles of Buddhism can be seen in the rituals followed in a Buddhist Funeral. There are certain mandatory rites that have to be followed during the funeral of a dead person. These rites are meant to ensure that the deceased is raised to a higher stage. Prayers are done invoking the goodness of the departed soul and wishes are made for a blissful life after death for the deceased.

The funeral rituals begin with giving the deceased a traditional ablution. Buddhist monks read out from religious scriptures, and these chants are believed to give the deceased the right guidance to achieve spiritual liberation. The teachings of the Buddha, which speak of the value of practising virtue and compassion in daily life, are read aloud. Meanwhile, the body is made ready for the final journey. Friends and family members usually keep some money in the casket of the dead person. This is done to pay for the deceased’s journey across the mythical River of Three Hells.

Then the casket is exhibited to the near and dear ones to allow them to pay their final respects by putting it at the altar. The relatives and friends offer condolences to the deceased’s family, while the visitors pray for his soul. The priests performing the rites keep reciting the sutras as the proceedings move on. Everyone present have to bow before the altar when this recital is over. After the proceedings, the family members of the departed distribute gifts to the visitors for sharing their sorrow.

Once these rituals are over, the family members can decide to cremate or bury the body according to their family customs. These rituals are meant to enable the family to alleviate their grief by offering prayers that will elevate the dead to a higher stage of enlightenment and knowledge.
