Written by Philippe Chavanne on Jul 28th, 2009 | Filed under: Culture

Residing in the remote mountainous areas of southwest China, the Miao ethnic group have always been puzzling the world with their interesting culture. Their batik, embroidery, and silver jewelry arts are unbeatable anywhere. In a village called Basha, the local Miao men have a unique hairstyle which is funny enough to make you laugh.

They only have hair on the top of their head and the rest is shaved bald! Their hair is almost always very long, and it’s usually braided into a bun on top.

When a boy reaches 14 years old, he starts to wear this hairstyle. Believe it or not, people use a big sickle to shave their hair, instead of a razor.

Before shaving the head, the Miao will hold a small ceremony. A man holds his sickle and rubs it on the ground to pull energy from the earth. Then he touches his clothes and palm with this sickle to bring in some power from the human body.

This ceremony is important to every local man, because it indicates that he has grown up.

It is said that a long time ago a thief went stealthily to the Basha Miao village on a night. Just before he tried to break into a home, people saw him. The villagers made a signal with their flintlocks to inform others. Immediately everyone went out and shouted Catch the thief! One villager caught a man who was just running and told others that he got the thief. But when people come to check the thief, they found he was a dummy in their village. The real thief was already gone.

That night, all the men were called in to discuss how to defense against theft. Some people said a different hairstyle could help them easily be recognized even in the dark. Finally the villagers reached an agreement that from then on, they would start wearing this hairstyle.

This hairstyle won the favor of all the local men. They think it makes them look more handsome and masculine. It’s also easier for them to go hunting and farming.
