Yes – Improving Your Reading Speed Is Possible
We all need to be able to read proficiently. It is essential to good communication with other people and to achieving success. The concept of speed reading grew from this idea. When reading at an average speed we are all able to gain much information but by being able to speed read we are able to gain a lot more and do so in much less time. The ability to speed read is growing in popularity and is now being taught to people all around the world.
Speed reading is a skill that means that you are able to read much faster than normal. Although there is no exact way or method to speed read there are some methods that people use and find helpful. Two such methods are called chunking and subvocalization. Everyone reads at different speeds. Being able to speed read means that you will be able to read faster, such as some speed readers who are capable of reading up to two thousand words in a minute and they are also able to retain half of what they have read. Of course this might well seem too far fetched for those of us who have never encountered speed reading before but for those who know how to do it, it is something that they use on a regular basis.
Speed reading actually came about through a method that is used by psychologists. They would use a machine called a tachistoscope which rapidly flashes images on a screen in front of people. They were astounded by the fact that, although some of the images were only seen for a fraction of a second, their subjects were able to recognize them. This was the basis for the concept of speed reading.
The United States Air Force found out about this ability and they made extensive use of speed reading, even adding their own input to the ability. Harvard then took the process even further and eventually they produced the first film that was made in order to teach the average person the art of speed reading.
Over the years, many people have used speed reading. One of the most famous speed readers was John F. Kennedy. It was said that his reading speed was amazing and he was a big propenent of the skill. One man named Howard Stephen Berg claims that he is the world’s fastest reader with the ability to read up to 25,000 words in a minute. He demonstrated his ability across the country on different television programs. For example, he once read an 1100 page book and scored a 100% on a memory recall test afterwards. While not everyone will be able to read that fast, it’s generally accepted that you can improve your reading speed.
There are many programs available today that are produced in order to teach people how to speed read. Some require the learner to use books that they are to practice with every single day. By sticking with the exercises you will not only be able to read twice as fast as you do now, but you might even be able to read three times as fast! Thanks to the advancements in technology there are also many software programs that are available that can help you to improve your reading speed.
Just as there are many programs available to teach you to read faster there are also many theories available. While some will advise that you see the words as images, others teach you to focus on the middle of the page or screen and the text that surrounds the point of focus becomes more visible as you gain experience. Whatever method you choose the ability to learn to speed read is something that we all have. The vital thing is that you believe that you can do it, as it will greatly enhance your life once you know how.
Overall, speed reading is a great tool that can make you more efficient and knowledgable. You can digest large sums of information very quickly and effectively.
